STEPHENVILLE (May 10, 2017) — Shelby Wood is the only athlete in the Flash’s coverage area to qualify for the UIL Track & Field State Meet in more than one individual event.

Polk won the Region II-2A championship in the 100 hurdles and placed second in the 300 hurdles, both at Porcupine Stadium in Springtown on April 29, automatically qualifying for this week’s state meet in both events. She completed the 100 hurdles in 15.87 seconds, just one-hundredth faster than Hayley Jordan of Price Carlisle. One spot back in third was Shelby’s sister, Sydney Polk, in 16.33.

Cheyenne Grubbs of Gladewater Union Grove was the lone hurdler ahead of Polk in the 300s, as the Hico senior qualified for state in 48.65 seconds, almost quarter second ahead of third-place Emily Pennartz of Petrolia.

Polk and Hico classmate Parker Wood are the only area athletes to win regional championships. The nine representatives in seven events from Stephenville and Lingleville each advanced with second-place finishes.

Wood won the boys pole vault at the Region II-2A event, clearing 14 feet, 9 inches. That’s nine inches more than his closest competitor, Tanner DeBord of Lindsay, who also qualified for state.

Entering the state meet, Polk’s season-best 15.87 at the regional ranks her third in Class 2A in the 100 hurdles. Her season-best time of 48.46 in the 300s ranks eighth. Wood is a favorite to find the medal stand in pole vault, as the season-best 14-9 ranks him third in 2A.

Wood competes at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the pole vault, while Shelby is in the Saturday afternoon running session with the 100 hurdles scheduled for 12:45 p.m. and the 300s at 2:05 p.m. The 1A-6A championships in the sport begin Thursday evening and continue through Saturday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin.
