Ray Seth Mathis, 83, of De Leon, went home to his Lord and Savior June 20, 2017, with his loving family by his side.
He was born February 26, 1934, in Comanche County to Walker Seth Mathis and Iva Wayne Sturdivant Mathis. Ray married his loving wife, Mary Oma, December 5, 1952, in Brady, Texas.
Ray was a faithful Christian. He worked his entire life as a farmer and rancher. He loved that he was able to work outside and enjoy God’s country. He was also employed with El Paso Natural Gas for over ten years. Ray lived in the De Leon community most all of his life and graduated from De Leon High School. He loved John Deere tractors and pickups. Ray also had a soft spot for animals, especially dogs and cats. His family was the center of his life, always. They were his pride and joy. Ray will be missed beyond measure by his family and many loving friends.
He is survived by his sons, David Ray Mathis and wife, Elvia, and Terry Montgomery Mathis and wife, Jamie; daughters, Janet Lee Mathis and Jennifer Marie Cooper and husband, Ken; grandchildren, Amy Marie Mathis-Reyna, Matthew Iley, Kenny Ray Cooper, Sara Rae Locke, Jade Marie Lagoski, Colton Ray Mathis and Walker Seth Dailey; great-grandchildren, Mattson Ray Locke, Sophie Reagan Locke, Weston David Locke, Maci Ellen Reyna, Kaden Gray, Charlie Marie Cooper, Kelton Tate Iley, Easton James Iley and J. Teddy Lagoski; and other extended family. Ray has been reunited with his wife of 63 years, Mary Oma Hanson Mathis; and parents, Walker Seth Mathis and Iva Wayne Sturdivant Mathis.
Private family graveside services were held in Downing Cemetery. Pallbearers were Matthew Locke, Colton Ray Mathis, Kenny Ray Cooper, David Lagoski, Matthew Iley and Walker Dailey. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Dwayne Miller, Judge Bobby Arthur, John Mac Weaver and Jim Bob Wofford.
