Champion sets tone early as locals earn $120K in round two

(Decmber 9, 2017) – When Richmond Champion earned more than $20,000 for splitting top two in bareback, everyone should have recognized what time it was.

It was payday for the Cowboy Capital of the World’s delegation at the National Finals Rodeo.

Athletes living in or tied to Erath County and the area won more than $120,000 in the second round Friday evening and are already approaching the quarter-million dollar mark.

Champion was biggest Friday winner of all the locals. He scored 87.5 points conquering Fancy Free of on Pete Carr’s Classic Pro Rodeo, matching the score of Tanner Aus on Pickett Pro Rodeo’s Scarlett Fever. Each were paid just shy of $23,500.

Whether it was heading, heeling or both, local cowboys were involved in five of the six runs that paid. Huckabay header Charly Crawford was second in 4.5 with Joseph Harrison for more than $20,000, their second night n the money. Also earning paydays in each of the initial two rounds was Huckabay heeler Paul Eaves, who joined Clay Smith third in 4.6 for more than $15,000. Kory Koontz heeled for Dustin Egusquiza and was fourth, earning $11,000 in 4.7. Two all-local teams were fifth and sixth as Luke Brown and Jake Long roping head and heels in 4.8 for almost $7,000 each while Chad Masters and Travis Graves took stopped the clock at 5.1 for more than $4,000 apiece.

Saddle bronc riding was the other good event for local athletes with Stephenville’s Sterling Crawley second and Tarleton’s Brody Cress third. Crawley rode Buetler & Sons Rodeo’s Cimmaron Jack for 83 points and more than $20,000, while Cress was half a point about $5,000 behind him after succeeding aboard Korkow Rodeo’s Meat Cracker.
