STEPHENVILLE (January 24, 2018) — The Tarleton State University Police Department offers a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) women’s self-defense course beginning Monday, Feb. 26. The free, 12-hour course, in four sessions, is open to female students, faculty, staff and the general public.

The course meets from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 26 and 27, and March 5 and 6.

RAD instructors focus on education and awareness, prevention, risk reduction and the avoidance of assault and rape. The RAD system is dedicated to teaching defensive concepts and techniques against various types of assault by using easy, effective and proven self-defense and martial arts tactics.

Course instructors are Sgts. Kristie Bint and Amanda Miller, and Officer Doug Johnson, all with the Tarleton Police Department. Participants are asked to meet in the foyer of the kinesiology area of Wisdom Gym on Feb. 26. From there, instructors will take participants to the class.

“Our goal is to provide women with the knowledge and skills to make educated decisions about their personal safety, because safety and survival in today’s world require a definite course of action,” Bint said. “We provide effective options by teaching women to take an active role in their own self-defense and psychological well-being.”

Minimum age for participants is 13. Due to the popularity of the course, students are encouraged to sign up early.

To register for the spring semester RAD course, contact Bint at 254-968-9565 or email bint@tarleton.edu. Additional information is available at www.tarleton.edu/police/community/rad.html.
