STEPHENVILLE (February 12, 2018) — The Theatre at Tarleton continues its 2017-18 season at the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium with performances of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

Performances take place at 7:30 each evening beginning Wednesday, Feb. 21, through Saturday, Feb. 24. Tickets are $10 for adults; $8 for Tarleton faculty, staff and non-Tarleton students; and $5 for Tarleton students with ID. Tickets are on sale from 2 to 6 p.m. weekdays at the Box Office.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2,000-year-old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus, with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. It tells the story of a crafty slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master, Hero, woo Philia, the courtesan next door.

However, things are never as easy as they seem, as chaos ensues with harebrained schemes, cases of mistaken identity and convoluted plot twists. Forum promises “Something for everyone: a comedy tonight!”

Stephen Sondheim, a Grammy and Tony award-winning lyricist and American stage musical and film composer, wrote the score for the play. He also wrote scores for musicals such as Sweeney Todd and West Side Story.

The play is directed by Mark Holtorf, associate professor of theater. Costume design is by costume shop supervisor Shayla Moose and set design is by Carol Stavish, associate professor of theater. This theatrical production is deemed appropriate for all audiences.
