Tarleton gears up for 8th annual invitational band festival

STEPHENVILLE (March 1, 2018) — Tarleton State University hosts the 8th Annual Invitational Band Festival Tuesday and Wednesday, March 6 and 7, featuring guest composer/clinician Robert W. Smith.

The eight participating bands, invited based on their previous success, will perform throughout both days in the auditorium of the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center. The public is invited. Admission is free.

Smith, professor of music and coordinator of the Music Industry Program at Troy University’s John M. Long School of Music, is one of the most popular composers in the world today with more than 700 published works.

Joining Smith will be adjudicators Bill Brent and Scott Dudley. Brent serves as director of operations and special projects and is former director of bands at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La. Dudley is the former director of bands at Belton High School.

Here’s the lineup:

Tuesday, March 6
9 a.m. – Henderson Junior High School
10 a.m. – Early High School
1 p.m. – Hico High School
2 p.m. – Tolar High School
3:15 p.m. – Eastland High School

Wednesday, March 7
9 a.m. – Stephenville High School
11 a.m. – Graham High School

As part of the festival, the Tarleton Symphonic Band and the Tarleton Wind Ensemble perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Dr. Noel Wallace and graduate assistant Chris Moix will direct the band, and Dr. Gary Westbrook the ensemble.

Smith, Brent and Dudley will guest conduct.

Admission to the Tuesday night concert is $5 or free with a Tarleton ID.
