The Dublin Lions are Area champions for the first time in school history!

Trailing 3-0 after four innings, Dublin exploded four six runs powered by Keith Wright’s three RBI double that moved the Lions out front 6-3 and they hung on for a 6-4 victory.

Hung on may be an understatement as closer Tim Teten faced a bases-loaded situation for the second straight game before striking out the final batter and securing the 2018 Dublin baseball team a spot in school history.

Tolar did its damage against Wright who more than compensated for the two earned runs he gave up while striking out three and giving up four hits. Wright went four innings, threw the 74 pitches and with one swing of the bat turned around the Lions fortunes in the fifth inning.

Rayce Jackson got things started in the inning when he smacked a line-drive double to left field. Griffin Pickett then showed patience at the plate, drew a walk, and Jackson snuck under the radar to steal third base.  Blaize Leatherwood hit a bobbled fly ball to load up the bases.

Angel Rameriz’s fielder’s choice scored Jackson and Tolar’s defense bobbled the throw to keep things loaded for Dublin. Cameron Olvera reached on an error that also allowed Pickett to score and make it a 3-2 contest. A ground ball by Teten made it a 3-3 score when Leatherwood made it home.

With the go-ahead run at third Wright just needed to get the ball in play and when he made the connection the only thing that stopped the ball from leaving the ballpark was a head-on wind of 20 plus miles an hour. His standup double scored Rameriz, Olvera and Teten for a 6-3 lead.

Wright gave way on the mound to Jacob Schubert who threw an inning of work before giving way to Teten who struck out four batters, allowed three hits and one run before closing out the contest under pressure.

Wright’s three RBI led Dublin while Olvera, Teten and Ramirez had one each. Jackson was a perfect 3-3 at the plate.

Dublin will face Brock in a one-game winner take all matchup Friday in a 7:30 pm game Friday at Weatherford Junior College.
