Stephenville’s pattern of feast and famine when it comes to hitting came back to haunt them as they tied up their area series with Iowa Park with a nine-hit affair only to have their bats go silent in the 4-0 shutout final.

Kade Averhoff, Gage Graham and Derek Gifford were the only Jackets to get a piece of Iowa Park pitching with one run each. Mason Castleberry got the start for Stephenville as he pitched 2.2 innings giving up five hits and three runs.

The Jackets relief pitching held the Hawks to just one more run the rest of the way as Kendal Storrs, Cade Dunavent and Daniel Luna all contributed. Storrs struck out three batters.

Game Two

Caleb Smith allowed just five hits and three runs while striking out three as Stephenville pounded out nine hits to top Iowa Park in a 4-3 hold-on-to-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller.

Stephenville jumped out front 4-0 in the first inning with Clay Krause getting thing rolling with a line-drive single to left field. Dunavent then sacrificed to third base pushed Krause to second. A double by Gifford scored Krause and the Jackets led a game for the first time in the series.

A strikeout left the Jackets with just one out to play with as Trevor Easter singled and scored Gifford and then he advanced to second on a poor throw.

Averhoff’s ground-ball single put runners at the corners for Stephenville and a big opportunity for Castleberry who made it a 4-0 game on a line-drive single that scored the final runs for the Jackets.

Castleberry topped the mound with one out in the seventh inning and pitched his way out of a bad situation where he gave up a single and hit a batter with a pitch. He then served up a pop fly and ground out to seal the deal.

Game One

Krause was 2-3 at the plate with an RBI but the rest of the Jackets’ offense was rather silent as Averhoff, Gifford and Dunavent had one hit each.

Castleberry got the start and gave up two hits and four runs while Storrs allowed three hits in relief.
