Alma Pope-Brown

Alma Pope-Brown, 74, died peacefully, surrounded by her family at home on Saturday, June 30, 2018

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, July 3rd at Hillcrest Church of Christ with Frank Brisco officiating. Burial will follow at Lower Greens Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Stephenville Funeral Home.

Alma was born on February 18, 1944 in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico to the late Manuel and Josefina Ochoa Briceno. She married Lee Cathey Pope in 1960, and had four children. While growing up in Chihuahua, Mexico, she began to breed a species of dog in which she introduced to the United States in the early 70’s the Chihuahua. The Los Angeles Times wrote an extensive article in 1972, about Alma, and the Chihuahua dogs that she bred and raised. She was instrumental in shipping the Chihuahuas all over the world.

In 1978 Alma and Lee moved from El Paso, where they had lived several years, to Stephenville, where she made her home until Lee passed away on September 18, 1997. She married Charles Brown in 2012. Alma was an accomplished businesswoman. She loved to cook, sew; in creating formal gowns and wedding dresses. She not only loved her family, but her church family, as well, as an active member at Hillcrest Church of Christ. She spent the latter days of her life taking care of others. She always put God first in her life.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Brown; daughters, Patricia and husband Scooter Tankersley, Rebecca and husband Tim Morton, Sandy and husband Keith Bailey; son, Lee and wife Jennifer Pope; grandchildren, Patrick Salyer, Vince and wife Maya Schilb, Lauren Pope, Erica Tankersley, Wayne Pope, Sarah Morton and Joshua Morton; great grandchildren, Mathew Epley, Lexi Muirheid, Eric Schilb, Jacob Schilb, and Vivienne Schilb

Besides her parents, and her first husband, Lee Pope, Alma was also preceded in death by a great grandchild, baby Salyer.
