John R. Boyd, retired Comanche County Sheriff and Austin Police Department Lieutenant, spent more than 30 years protecting and serving, passed away Monday July 30, 2018 after a long and well-fought battle with lung cancer.

John was born to the late Vernon and Golda Boyd of Comanche County, on September 28, 1943.  John departed for Austin, Texas the day after graduating Comanche High School and was later quoted as saying “I spent most of my young life trying to leave Comanche, and then spent most of my adult life trying to figure out how to get back”.

Boyd joined the Austin Police Department in 1966, moving up in the ranks to Lieutenant serving many details, but recognized his time with the Greater Austin Area Organized Crime Detail as one of his more rewarding assignments. Upon retiring from the Austin Police Department in 1995, John met his goal of returning to Comanche where he fulfilled another lifetime dream of serving his community as Sheriff from 2000 to 2004, a role that he carried with great pride and honor.   Boyd went on to serve Comanche County Sheriff’s Office as a Reserve Deputy completing a 47-year career in Law Enforcement.

Retirement years for John were met with many new opportunities and he could be found practicing his golf swings in the front yard of his home, or traveling the backcountry of Wyoming fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary A. Boyd; their children, Kristy Ochoa and husband Lino, Bill Boyd, Sarah Rivera and husband Raimy, Dary Boyd and wife Kimberly.  John also has five grandchildren, Gavin, Garrett, Katia, Kenzlee and Rafael, and his beloved four-legged child Wilson.  He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family.  He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Vernon and Golda, as well as his sisters, Virginia Edwards and Mary Ann Kruger.
