STEPHENVILLE (August 14, 2018) –  Texas Health Stephenville (THS) hospital is hosting a lab screening on Friday, Aug. 17 from 7-10 a.m. in the Belknap Lobby at Texas Health Stephenville. Proceeds will benefit The American Heart Association and the Texas Health Stephenville Heart Walk.

According to heart.org, The American Heart Association is a national voluntary health agency to help reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Participants going to the “Know Your Numbers” general lab screening will have the option of doing a complete profile for $70 which includes lipid, hemogram and chemistry tests. They can also do a lipid profile which is a breakdown of good and bad cholesterol levels for $25 or a thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) check and a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) check for $30 each. Fasting is also required after midnight the night before the screening for accurate results.

Julie Blackburn, the clinical pharmacist at Texas Health Resources in Stephenville, says that many hospitals participate in the Tarrant County Heart Walk.

“(The Tarrant County Heart Walk) promotes physical activity and heart-healthy living in a fun, family-oriented environment,” Blackburn said. “This year, over 1 million walkers will participate in more than 300 events, raising funds to save lives from the country’s number one and number five killers – heart disease and stroke.”

In 2016, the Tarrant County Heart Walk raised more than $1.1 million for cardiovascular disease and stroke research. THS Stephenville is hosting several fundraising events in August and early September to help raise money for the American Heart Association.

On Friday, Aug. 24, THS is hosting a nacho bar in the atrium from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Customers can get nachos and a drink for $5. On Friday, Aug. 31, THS is having a “Friday Freeze” and will have ice cream sundaes and ice cream floats for $3 in the atrium from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The last fundraiser will be a silent auction on Wednesday, Sept. 5 through Friday, Sept. 7 in the Belknap Lobby. The auction closes Sept. 7 at 2 p.m.

“Our big money raiser is the silent auction, which all of the departments in the hospital here will put together gift baskets from wine and cheese baskets; to a summer beach basket; to a cook-off or spa candles,” Blackburn said. “Last year we had 20 to 30 baskets. Anybody is welcome to come and make bids on those. It’s not just for the hospital employees. Anyone in the community (is invited) who wants to come by and check it out and we’ll have those gift baskets displayed in the Belknap Lobby.”

Blackburn said it’s a good feeling to be a part of a good cause.

“Heart disease (affects) so many people. It’s like a number one killer in our country and so the money that we raise will help go towards research and education to help, hopefully, not make that number one anymore and it feels good to get to do some good,” Blackburn said.

Blackburn also encourages many individuals to contribute in any they can to help support The American Heart Association.

“Everybody has somebody in their family that is affected by heart disease or stroke and because it affects you personally, it’s a good cause to come and help raise money for,” Blackburn added.
