STEPHENVILLE – Led by a career-high 24 points on 10-11 shooting from Josh Hawley, Tarleton handled Arlington Baptist 81-59 to improve to 7-2 on the season Wednesday night.
The Patriots came out firing to the tune of a 9-3 lead over the first four minutes, but Hawley’s first bucket of the game started an 8-2 Tarleton run that tied the game at 11-11. Richie Mitchell netted a layup to put Tarleton on top and start a dominating 29-9 run into the final minute of the opening half that put the Texans up 40-20.
After a three-ball from Arlington Baptist with 35 seconds, Clashon Gaffney beat the buzzer with a put-back dunk to send Tarleton into the break leading 42-23.
Out of the break, Brandon Goldsmith drained a three-ball to extend the lead out to 22 to begin the second half. Mitchell and Hawley added five more on a 5-2 surge to extend the lead out to 25 in the first three minutes.
Tarleton continued to pour it on by extending the lead out to 30 with just over three minutes left in the game before walking away with a 22-point win for victory No. 7 on the season.
Hawley led the way with 24 points on 10-11 shooting and eight rebounds, which tied Jesse Hill for the team lead in boards. Randall Broddie netted 17 points while Hill (11) and Goldsmith (10) also scored in double figures.
Gaffney (7), Mitchell (5), Corinthian Ramsey (3), Preston Enloe (2), and Isaiah Boling (2) rounded out the scoring for Tarleton. As a team, Tarleton shot .532 from the floor while holding the Patriots to a .367 mark.
Tarleton will hit the road for the second time this season next week when the Texans head to Las Vegas for the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic. The Texans will begin the tournament on Tuesday against Le Moyne at 4:15 p.m. CT and closes it out Wednesday against Rollins at 2 p.m. CT.
