STEPHENVILLE (January 11, 2019) — Killeen attorney Gregory K. Simmons, a member of Tarleton State University’s Class of 1986, is the keynote speaker for the school’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 21.
The free event begins at 7 a.m. in the Tarleton Dining Hall on the Stephenville campus and highlights the legacy and life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the civil rights leader’s 90th birthday.
The community is invited. Reservations deadline is Friday, Jan. 18.

In addition to the keynote address, Tarleton’s Chamber Choir will perform three numbers — “Keep Your Lamps!” arranged by Andre Thomas, the L.L. Fleming arrangement of “Give Me Jesus” and Rollo Dilworth’s “Walk in Jerusalem” — and junior animal science major Jasmin Trevino will be honored for her acceptance into the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Undergraduate Fellows Program.
Simmons, who grew up in a military household in Killeen, received his undergraduate degree from Tarleton before earning his Juris Doctorate at Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston. From there he went to work as an assistant attorney general in the U.S. Virgin Islands and then for the U.S. Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps.
He was serving at the Pentagon in the Office of the Army’s General Counsel when the World Trade Center was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001. As a Tarleton student, he was a member of Tarleton ROTC and the Texans football team.
