STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton Baseball swept its home-opening doubleheader over visiting UC-Colorado Springs with a nail-biting 9-8 win in Game 1 and a 10-0 shutout in Game 2 on Saturday at the Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex.
The Texans improve to 4-8 overall on the season and will play a doubleheader on Sunday against UCCS to close out the four-game series with the first game scheduled for 11 a.m.
Game 1: Tarleton 9, UCCS 8
UC-Colorado Springs jumped out to an early 3-1 lead on the Texans through two innings before the bats woke up for the home team. After Colby Seltzer scored on a passed ball for the Texans in the opening frame, Tyler Parker smashed a home run to left center to cut the deficit to 3-2. Sam Scarborough would tie the game at 3-3 in the second after scoring on an error.
After the Mountain Lions scored a run in the third to regain the lead at 4-3, Parker stepped up again, this time with a runner on, and powered his second home run of the game – this time a 2-run shot to right field – to put the Texans up 5-4 and they never trailed again. Parker finished the game going 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Texan offense.
Hunter Thomas added a 2-out, RBI single to left center in the fourth inning to pad the Texan lead to 6-4.
In the sixth inning with the Texans up 6-5, they added three insurance runs that they would ultimately need at the end. Thomas picked up his second RBI of the game on a 1-out double to right field that scored Blake Burns. Abel Osoria singled through the left side to score Jacob Walker and Osoria would later score on a passed ball after Parker moved him to third on a double to center.
Leading 9-5 in the seventh, UCCS scored three runs with two outs to cut the deficit to 9-8. The Mountain Lions had the tying run at third after a triple but Connor Flanagan came on in relief to get the final out to pop up to left to record the save.
Ty Jones got the start for the Texans, tossing two innings and giving up three runs and striking out one in the no-decision. Jon Law picked up his first win of the season by throwing four innings of relief with seven strikeouts and no walks with just two runs allowed.
Game 2: Tarleton 10, UCCS 0
The offense kept rolling in Game 2 as the Texans scored a season-high 10 runs for their second shutout of the year.
After picking up LSC Pitcher of the Week honors with a 1-hit shutout last week, Brian Archibald was just as dominate this time around. The senior right-hander tossed six shutout innings of three-hit ball while striking out seven to move to 3-1 on the year.
Colby Seltzer, Tyler Fowler and Jake Spence each had two-hit games as part of an 11-hit effort by the Texans. Eight Texans had at least one RBI in the game while Hunter Thomas led the team with two runs batted in.
The Texans gave Archibald plenty of run support early as they scored at least one run in the first four innings. Folwer had an RBI single in the first to get things started, while Able Osoria hand an RBI single in the third and Selzter drove home a run with a double in the fourth.
The Texans broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Thomas had a two-run single to highlight the inning while Spence added an RBI single.
Case Rolen relieved Archibald in the seventh and struck out the side in his inning of relief.
