Texans falter late in series-opening loss at UT Permian Basin

ODESSA – Home runs doomed Tarleton down the stretch and the Texans suffered a 7-4 loss to UT Permian Basin in the series opener Friday afternoon.

Tarleton struck first by putting up a three spot in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Jon Law got the inning started with a double and Hunter Thomas drove him in with an RBI single. Thomas would later score on an RBI double from Jacob Walker. Walker would cap off the inning by touching home on a sacrifice fly Colby Seltzer.

Meanwhile, Tarleton starter Ty Jones was cruising through the first three innings before the Falcons got on the board with a two-run home run in the fourth. Jones go on to enjoy the best start in his Texan career with five innings of three-hit baseball and seven strikeouts.

The bullpen couldn’t hold onto the lead, however, as the Falcons scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh and eighth – both on two-run home runs – to down the Texans. The Tarleton offense added one more on a sacrifice fly in the seventh and stranded two runners in both the eighth and ninth inning without pushing any more across.

Blake Burns led the offense with two base hits while Tyler Fowler, Tyler Parker, Law, Thomas, and Walker supplied one hit each in the seven-hit team effort.

Tarleton and UT Permian Basin will renew the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Odessa with a doubleheader.
