Stephenville put together just the right kind of baseball game Tuesday night as the Jackets hit the ball, threw strikes and scored enough runs for a 3-1 win against the defending District 7-4A champion Godley.
It was a real gem for the #9 Jackets (14-2-1) who faced left-hander Chase Lummus (Texas signee) a pitcher they had never scored a run on (four tries) before tagging him with three runs in the second inning.

How special was the win?
It was only the second time Lummus has lost a high school game in his four-year career!
“Since I have been here we have faced them five times.” Coach Justin Swenson said. “This is the first time we have scored a run against him.”
Despite taking the loss, Lummus was masterful in his pitching performance as he allowed only three hits with Gabe Moore, Cade Dunavent and Trace Morrison each collecting a rap against him. Morrison had the Jackets only RBI while Tyeler Reed got the only free trip to first base that Lummus gave up.

The Jackets pitching rotation Mason Castleberry, Daniel Luna and Caleb Smith scattered eight hits. Castleberry got the start going 4.1 innings and striking out four.
It’s a pitching rotation Swenson plans on using throughout district play.
“We’ve got multiple arms,” Swenson said. “We are going to have out starter go through a lineup a couple of times and then go to middle relief and then close out the game.”
The smile on Swenson’s face was a little bigger than usual following the win.
“It’s a big relief to open with a win against the back-to-back district champs and a state finalist last year,” Swenson said. “When you can take those guys down it’s a big confidence booster.”
Stephenville travels to Brownwood Friday to take on the 6-8 Lions.
