Tarleton Softball extended its winning streak to nine games and completed the three-game sweep of MSU Texas with a 6-1 victory on Saturday at the Tarleton Softball Complex.
The TexAnns improve to 26-8 overall and 11-7 in the Lone Star Conference. The TexAnns outscored the Mustangs 20-1 in the series.
With winds gusting as high as 35 miles per hour in from center field, the TexAnns had to rely on line drive base hits and that’s exactly what they did offensively. The TexAnns scattered 12 hits – all singles – all across the field as part of a six-run third inning to down the Mustangs.
MSU Texas (16-16) took the first lead of the game with an RBI single in the third inning. The Mustangs managed only five hits all afternoon with two of the hits resulting in their lone run.
In the bottom half of the third inning, Tarleton had eight hits in the frame, including five straight singles to break the game open. Jessica Lee and Elizabeth Svienty started the score spree with two straight bunt singles. A single to left by Tanna Huie loaded the bases for Destiny Crumpley who followed with a 2-run single to center to give the TexAnns the lead for good. Amanda Conner ripped an RBI single to right while Morgan Ling delivered with a 2-run single to left. Lee had her second hit of the inning with an RBI single up the middle.
Four TexAnns had mult-hit performances: Elizabeth Svienty (2-for-4), Tanna Huie (2-for-3), Morgan Ling (2-for-3, 2 RBI), and Jessica Lee (2-for-3, RBI).
In the circle was Jordan Withrow and she picked up her second win of the series and 11th victory on the season by tossing six inning of four-hit ball with eight strikeouts and only one run allowed. Julia Wernet came in to close the game out in the seventh inning and allowed one hit and had one strikeout in a scoreless appearance.
Tarleton will host St. Mary’s for a South Central regional doubleheader on Tuesday, April 2 at 2 and 4 p.m. at the Tarleton Softball Complex.
