Tarleton Softball remains No. 4 in NCAA Regional poll

No. 19 Tarleton Softball remains at No. 4 in the second NCAA regional poll that was released Wednesday afternoon.

With a record of 36-11 under third-year head coach Mark Cumpian, Tarleton is back in the regional rankings for the third straight season. The No. 4 seed ties the highest regional ranking in program history, matching last year’s spot and the first regional poll of the season this year.

The top five spots remained the same and are all occupied by Lone Star Conference teams – Texas A&M-Kingsville (1), Texas A&M-Commerce (2), West Texas A&M (3), Tarleton (4), and Cameron (5). Angelo State is ranked seventh in the poll, giving the LSC six of the eight spots in the regional poll.

Colorado Mesa and St. Mary’s round out the top eight spots at No. 6 and 8, respectively, while Rogers St. and Dixie St. are on the outside looking in at No. 9 and 10.

Eight teams will represent the South Central region in the NCAA Tournament, which includes the tournament champions from the Lone Star, Heartland, and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conferences as well as five at-large teams from those leagues. The top two seeds in the region will play host to a double elimination tournament, after which the winning teams from each location will meet in the Super Regional Series for the chance to play in the Women’s College World Series.

The No. 1 seed of the rankings will play host to the No. 4, 5, and 8 teams while the No. 2 seed will host the No. 3, 6, and 7 teams.

Tarleton will close out the regular season at home against West Texas A&M for a regional showdown on April 26-27.
