Huie’s walk-off RBI single lifts No. 19 Tarleton to NCAA Regional Semifinals

COMMERCE – Tanna Huie’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted No. 19 Tarleton to a 2-1 victory over Cameron in the opening round of the NCAA Division II South Central regional tournament.

The TexAnns, who earned the No. 3 seed in the regional tournament, advance to the regional semifinals to take on the winner of No. 2 seed Texas A&M-Commerce and No. 7 Dixie State on Friday, May 10 at noon in Commerce. It’s the fourth regional tournament victory for third-year head coach Mark Cumpian and the first time the TexAnns won in the opening round of the regional since 2015 when they advanced to the Super Regionals.

Huie had one of four hits for Tarleton in the game – all singles. Kadyn Kirkpatrick led off the seventh inning with a pinch-hit walk and Morgan Ling came in to run for Kirkpatrick. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Lee, Cameron opted to intentionally walk Georgia Capell for the second time in the game. That set the stage for Huie, a first-team All-Region left fielder, who lined a single over the second baseman’s head to bring home Ling for the winning run.

Jordan Withrow was in the circle to start off the regional tournament for the TexAnns and for the second straight outing, Withrow was tasked with facing the Aggies. Withrow shutout Cameron 2-0 in the opening round of the LSC Tournament last week and had similar results today.

Withrow (22-4) threw all seven innings, allowed one unearned run, and struck out three with only five hits allowed. Withrow got out of trouble in the sixth and seventh innings to keep the TexAnns in the game. In the sixth, Cameron had two on and no one out and retired the next three batters to get out of the jam. In the seventh, Withrow got the Aggies to hit into a double play to end the inning.

The TexAnns scored the game’s first run in the third inning on a bases loaded walk by Karli Herron to score Capell. Amanda Connor led the TexAnns with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Jessica Lee and Huie had the other two hits for the TexAnn offense.
