Texan Golf in second after opening round of RJGA Shootout in Arizona

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Tarleton Golf is in second place and only six strokes off the lead after the opening round of the RJGA Shootout at Estrella.

The Texans carded a first-round score of 294 (+6) at the Golf Club of Estrella, which is a Par 72, 5,909-yard course. Cal State – San Marcos holds the top spot after shooting even par 288. As a team, Tarleton totaled 49 pars and 13 birdies in the round. The 13 birdies rank third out of 18 teams.

Junie Khaw led the Texans on the day, carding a 2-under-par 70 to tie for second place on the individual leaderboard. Khaw, who shot -2 on the front nine, recorded three birdies and 14 pars in the round. Khaw’s 14 pars rank second amongst all players in the tournament. Khaw shot -1 on 10 Par 4’s on the day, which is third for individuals.

Sophie Caldon is tied for 14th after firing a 74 (+2) on the day. Caldon led the Texans with four birdies in the round – three on the back nine – and added eight pars. Caldon’s four birdies rank second in the tournament through one round. Caldon shot -2 on Par 5’s, ranking second overall for that category.

Casey Leatherman and Sofia Rodriguez each finished the round with a 75 (+3) and are tied for 22nd. Leatherman posted three birdies and nine pars on the day while Rodriguez recorded three birdies and 10 pars. Leatherman was at her best on Par 5’s shooting -2 on four Par 5 holes. Rodriguez was also under par on Par 5’s, going 1-under for the round.

Tarleton had four players record three or more birdies in the round with Caldon, Khaw, Leatherman and Rodriguez.

Breanna Smith had eight pars in the round and shot a 94 (+22) to round out the Tarleton lineup.

The Texans will look to make a move to the top of the leaderboard when the final round starts on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m.
