ERATH COUNTY – A local man was killed in a grass fire on his property along FM 2481 Monday afternoon.
According to reports, Erath County Volunteer Fire Rescue and Selden Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to a report of a grass fire on a property near the Pony Creek Church just north of Three Way on 2481. Upon arrival, they discovered the cause of the fire was a vehicle stuck on private property.
According to Erath County Sheriff’s Captain Jeremey Woodruff, “a gentleman got his pickup stuck and while he was attempting to get it unstuck, the fire started. He was unable to escape.”
Unfortunately, Leroy Worrell, 92 of Stephenville, succumbed to the fire before the first responders arrived. Woodruff reported the ECSO investigated the incident and have ruled the cause of death as accidental due to the fire. Worrell’s family has been notified.
