Tarleton Tennis completes 2020 spring roster with international standouts

STEPHENVILLE – First-year head coach Elianne Douglas-Miron has filled out the roster for her first full season at the helm of the Tarleton Women’s Tennis program by adding two international standouts, Gaayatri Shankar and Delfina Rodriguez.

“I am very excited to have Gaayatri and Delfina joining our team this spring,” said Douglas-Miron. “The addition of these two players will push us to the next level. Both girls embody the Tarleton core values and will be great additions to our team.”

Shankar comes to Tarleton as a junior after spending three years at Sacred Heart College in Kochi, India. Shankar has been ranked as high as the No. 57 singles player in the country of India. She was a quarterfinalist in doubles of the Fenesta National Championship of Indian last year and a quarterfinalist in singles of the Grass Court National Tournament.

“Gaayatri has an explosive game,” said Douglas-Miron. “She is a hard worker on the court and will compete for every single point. She will also be a big help in our doubles game. Her doubles experience will make an immediate impact for us and I can’t wait to see her in action.”

“I chose Tarleton because of the tennis team and I want to contribute to their success,” said Shankar. “I was also struck by Tarleton’s rich tradition’s and I look forward to studying accounting in the business school.”

Rodriguez comes to Tarleton after a standout junior career in Argentina. The freshman is a four-time Spanish AAT G3 Champion and has been ranked the highest-rated singles player in her region. She has also reached as high as No. 25 in the nation of Argentina in singles rankings.

“Delfina will be a fun player to work with,” said Douglas-Miron. “She has shown tremendous excitement about becoming a Texan and competing in the spring. I know she has been working very hard on the court and in the gym to be ready for our first match. Her passion for the game and work ethic will help us right away.”

“I chose Tarleton for the great athletic and academic culture,” said Rodriguez. “I am looking forward to being a part of a top tennis program and can’t wait to immerse myself in Texan culture.”

Shankar and Rodriguez will bring the Tarleton tennis roster to a full six. They join returners Alicia Barbaroux, Faustine Palatte, and Nathalie Ulander as well as freshman Celia Vaudiau, who signed last May.
