Simcho, McQuirter named The Grove Student-Athletes of the Month for January

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton Athletics has announced that Michael Simcho and Jasmine McQuirter of Texan Track and Field are the January recipients of the ‘Tarleton Student-Athletes of the Month’ award, presented by The Grove.

The student-athlete of the month is selected based on the all-around student-athlete for one male and one female. The student-athlete will show effort and excellence in academics, leadership, civility, dedication to the team, campus involvement, community service, and the ability to serve as role models for current and future Tarleton State University students and student-athletes.

To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be nominated by their head coach or athletic administrator and maintain a grade point average of 2.75 or better. Only in-season athletes are eligible for the award each month.

Simcho began the season by setting a new school indoor record in the 1,000-meter race. Simcho placed ninth in the 1000m with a time of 2:33.98, surpassing Stefan Campos’ 2015 record by 5.73 seconds (2:39.71). He also placed fourth in the 800m run with a time a 1:56.90 in Tarleton’s opening weekend at the Corky Classic in Lubbock.

McQuirter opened her indoor track and field season with an NCAA provisional mark that had her ranked No. 4 in the nation in the women’s long jump after Tarleton’s opening week. McQuirter posted a 6.00m (19-8 1/4) in the women’s long jump. She also finished 22nd in the 60m dash with a time of 7.83 in the opening weekend.

Once selected as student-athlete of the month, the recipients are eligible to be selected for Tarleton Student-Athlete of the Year award at the end of the season. The yearly award will be recognized at the beginning of the following fall semester.
