STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton Women’s Basketball is ranked No. 5 in the first NCAA South Central Regional poll of the season.
The Texans are 19-5 overall with a 13-5 mark in Lone Star Conference play. Tarleton currently holds a two-game lead for fourth place in the overall LSC standings, which would guarantee the Texans a first-round bye in the LSC Tournament if they hold onto a top-4 seed. The Texans are 17-5 this season against NCAA Division II teams and have a 16-5 in-region record.
The Lone Star Conference makes up six of the 10 teams in the regional poll, led by Texas A&M-Commerce at No. 1, followed by Lubbock Christian (2), West Texas A&M (3), Angelo State (8), and Eastern New Mexico (9). The other South Central Region conference, the Rocky Mountain Athletic (RMAC), makes up the other four spots with Colorado Mesa (4), Western Colorado (6), Westminster (7) and Colorado School of Mines (10).
The Texans have defeated three of the 10 regionally-ranked teams this season, coming up with road wins against West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico, while defeating Colorado Mesa at home in the second game of the season.
Tarleton has qualified for nine NCAA regional tournaments, including each of the last three seasons, which is the second-longest streak in program history.
There will be two more polls before the 64 teams are selected to compete for a National Championship. The NCAA South Central regional tournament will consist of the tournament champions of the Lone Star and Rocky Mountain Athletic conferences as well as six at-large teams. The top seed in the region will be the tournament host from March 13-16.
Head coach Misty Wilson and the Texans have four games remaining in the regular season, including two home games this week. Tarleton will host St. Mary’s on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m. and St. Edward’s on Saturday at 2 p.m.
