Sweetwater scored first, but Stephenville counterpunch with seven straight scoring possessions for a 58-32 road win Friday night.

Senior running back Kason Phillips and the Yellow Jackets’ offensive line ripped big holes and ran through Mustangs’ defense. Phillips scored three times rushing for 189 yards on 17 carries and capped his night with a 48-yard scoring run.

With Stephenville presenting such a potent run threat, it opened up the airways for quarterback Gavin Rountree, and he connected with Coy Eakin on a 39-yard scoring pass.

Rountree made the switch back to quarterback from wide receiver and after missing his first pass connected on his next 12 finishing at 12-13 for 146 yards. When he wasn’t clicking on passes, Rountree was also hurting Sweetwater with his feet as scored runs of 1, 23, and yards and added 55 yards rushing to the Jackets totals.

Eakin double-dipped into the scoring when he took over at quarterback in the fourth quarter, and he capped the Jackets’ night with a 28-yard touchdown run.

Eakin, the No. 2 quarterback, also ran 28 yards for the game’s final TD with 4:06 left in the contest.
