It seemed the only thing between Stephenville (3-3) and the end zone Friday night was the goal line as the Yellow Jackets marched their way to a 59-34 wood-shed whipping of Brownwood (2-4) at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Led by six rushing touchdowns from senior running back Kason Phillips, Stephenville never punted and only had a couple of miscues as the Jackets pulled away after a tight 17-14 fireworks filled first quarter of play.
Quarterback Gavin Rountree also had a big night throwing for 310 yards and completing passes to five different receivers. Rountree was 24-34 passing as he guided the Stephenville to 673 yards of offense.

The only thing Rountree didn’t do was throw a touchdown, but that was understandable considering Philips didn’t give many opportunities as he scored every fourth time he touched the ball on runs of 37, 11, 1, 25, 30 and 24 yards.
Stephenville was incredibly efficient with drives four touchdown drives of 75 or more yards, including a 93-yard march.
The Yellow Jackets’ defense, which has looked porous at times this season, held the Lions to 369 yards of offense, and Stephenville came up with four turnovers that were turned into 17 points.
Brownwood’s ground game was held in check as the Lions rushed for 150 yards on 23 carries. More than half of the Lions’ ground yards came on a 79-yard run by Royshad Henderson.
Henderson’s run made it a 10-7 game after Phillips had started things off with a 37-yard score, and Corbin Poston booted a 24-yard field goal for the Jackets.
Stephenville countered with a 1-yard run by Reese young, and Brownwood punched back with a 58-yard scoring pass from Blaize Espinoza to Jason Jackson.

The second quarter belonged to Stephenville as Phillips scored on an 11-yard run before the Yellow Jackets defense turned up the heat. Kevin Bowery’s crushing quarterback sack popped the ball loose, and sophomore Malachi Arredondo scooped up the ball and outran everyone to the end zone on a 41-yard fumble return.

While Brownwood would manage three scores in the second half, the night belonged to Stephenville as Philips turned up the heat behind the blocking Mason Butchee, Logan Davis, Gavyn Sharp, Matthew Cerda, Alex De Leon and Harrison Barkley.
Philips and the Jackets appeared to get stronger as the night started to wind down as he scored three times in the final quarter on runs of 25, 30 and 24 yards.
While Rountree didn’t toss a touchdown, he kept his receivers busy as Trace Morrison caught nine passes for 62 yards, and Coy Eakin has eight catches for 125 yards.
WHAT’S NEXT?
The Jackets are returning home after more than 1,500 miles of road games and a month away from Tarleton’s Memorial Stadium to face No. 3 Waco La Vega.
La Vega pounded Waxahachie Life 62-0 as was leading 55-0 at halftime before calling off the dogs.
