ST. GEORGE, Utah – Tarleton played its first official Western Athletic Conference match of the season Friday afternoon and swept singles play to put a tally in the win column, 6-1 over Chicago State.

This is the second WAC opponent Tarleton has played this season. However, the Jan. 31 match at UT Rio Grande Valley was credited as a non-conference match. The teams will meet later in the season in a conference match. Tarleton is 2-0 against WAC opponents this season and now enter the WAC Standings win column at 1-0.

“I am so happy that we got our first official WAC win today,” said head coach Elianne Miron. “It was a total team effort. We came out a little slow in doubles, but the girls did a tremendous job turning it around in singles. We look forward to getting after it again tomorrow against Grand Canyon.”

After Tarleton dropped the doubles point with losses in the top two flights, the Texans came back swinging to take all six singles points.

Tarleton evened the match at 1-1 right away by taking the No. 6 singles point by default and then Elsa Boisson notched the first earned WAC point in program history with a 6-0, 6-4 win in the No. 4 flight to even things up. Martha Makantasi pushed her WAC-best winning streak to nine in a row with a win at No. 3 to put Tarleton on the brink of a clinch at 3-1.

The reigning WAC Singles Player of the Week, Mihaela Cordreanu, delivered the clinching point with her second straight No. 1 victory (6-1, 6-3). Celia Vaudiau and Jemi Aguilar went on to finish out their wins in No. 5 and 2, respectively, to give Tarleton a 6-1 win. Aguilar improved her personal winning streak to seven in a row.
