STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton Athletics has announced that Kevin Baez of Texan Track and Field and Cross Country and Amber Strange of Women’s Volleyball are the March recipients of the ‘Tarleton Student-Athletes of the Month’ award, presented by The Grove.

The student-athlete of the month is selected based on the all-around student-athlete for one male and one female. The student-athlete will show effort and excellence in academics, leadership, civility, dedication to the team, campus involvement, community service, and the ability to serve as role models for current and future Tarleton State University students and student-athletes.

To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be nominated by their head coach or athletic administrator and maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Only in-season athletes are eligible for the award each month.

Baez made Tarleton history as the first athlete to receive All-Western Athletic Conference recognition when he placed 10th at the WAC Cross Country Championships. The sophomore clocked a time of 25:04 on the 8k course and was named to the All-WAC second team at the conclusion of the race. Baez also posted the highest individual finish of any athlete during Tarleton’s abbreviated cross country season at the Incarnate Word Invitational on Jan. 29 when he took sixth place and set a personal record of 24:43.20. The Vanderbilt, Texas native has recorded four top-10 finishes in 8k races in his Texan cross country career. Baez is expected to compete in the 1,500m, 5k and 10k during the outdoor track and field season, beginning with Saturday’s UTA Invitational.

Strange powered the Texans through the final month of their spring season and led Tarleton Volleyball to the first completed winning season of the NCAA Division I era. Tarleton was 6-4 in the month of March and Strange accounted for 108 kills over the final month, including five matches in double figures. She topped the 1,000-career kill mark during that span and had a 22-kill performance in a road win at TCU on March 20.

Once selected as student-athlete of the month, the recipients are eligible to be selected for Tarleton Student-Athlete of the Year award at the end of the season. The yearly award will be recognized at the beginning of the following fall semester.
