SAN ANGELO – Concho City is the nickname commonly given to San Angelo, Texas.

Although on Wednesday and Thursday, ‘PR City’ was a more apt moniker for Tarleton track and field.

Five multi-event athletes combined to set 34 individual personal records for the Texans at the Angelo State David Noble Relays. More than half of the total – 18 to be exact – took place on Thursday to conclude the heptathlon and decathlon.

Emily Simon delivered arguably the best performance of her Texan career, as she finished fourth in the heptathlon at 4,870 points. Simon who earned a bronze medal in the pentathlon at the 2020 Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships, surpassed her personal record in the event by more than 800 points.

She now ranks second in the heptathlon in the Western Athletic Conference. The Vernon, Texas native is 255 points away from breaking Tarleton’s outdoor school record in the event. She sits inside the top-10 in the conference in three events in addition to the heptathlon: the high jump (5′ 3.25″, 3rd), 100m hurdles (14.47, 5th) and long jump (18′ 3.25″, 7th).

Three other athletes joined Simon in entering the top-10 of the WAC outdoor performance list in the heptathlon or decathlon. Sarah Ahmadi took eighth place in the heptathlon with 3,604 points. On the men’s side, Isaac Hutchings and Skyler Sandusky finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the decathlon with scores of 5,638 points and 5,566 points.

Ahmadi, Sandusky and Hutchings all made their collegiate debuts in multi-event competitions. Ahmadi and Hutchings, both of whom are freshmen, rank eighth in the WAC in the respective events. The senior Sandusky’s score in the decathlon is ninth-best in the conference.

Simon capped her stay in San Angelo with a trio of top-five finishes to close out the heptathlon. She turned in her top performance of the afternoon with a 720-point effort in the long jump to place fifth. Simon improved her personal record in the long jump by nearly two feet. She then claimed third place in the javelin with a throw of 104′ 00″ before crossing the finish line fifth in the 800m in 2:39.99.

Sandusky set personal records in all five events he competed in on Thursday. His top performance of the afternoon came in the 1,500m – the final event of the decathlon. Sandusky clocked a time of 4:58.97 to score 566 points and claim fourth place. Prior to his run, Sandusky set college bests in the 110m hurdles (16.47), javelin (128′ 10″), discus “67′ 06″) and pole vault (8′ 6.25”).

Hutchings was third in the pole vault at 13′ 9.25″ (673 points) and continues to rank 10th in the WAC in the event. He tallied personal records in the remaining four events. Hutchings turned in times of 5:04.90 in the 1,500m and 16.59 in the 110m hurdles, threw the javelin 115′ 07″ and heaved the discus 56′ 00″.”

From Allen, Texas, Ahmadi recorded her highest individual finish of the two-day affair in the 800m, taking fourth place in 2:36.72. She also set a personal record in the javelin with a throw of 76′ 08″.

Chandee Bachmeyer was the fifth athlete to compete for Tarleton at ASU. She did not participate in Thursday’s events but sat in sixth place in the heptathlon at 2,737 points at the halfway mark of the competition. The junior placed fifth in the pentathlon at the 2020 LSC Indoor Championships.

Tarleton only sent multi-event athletes to San Angelo, as the program will now travel its full contingent to Arlington for the UTA Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
