STEPHENVILLE – Jordan Dickerson hit her second walk-off of the season with an RBI single in the seventh inning of game two to give the Texans a 4-3 victory over North Texas and a split of a doubleheader Wednesday.
Game 1: North Texas 7, Tarleton 2
A rocky start proved to be too large a deficit to overcome for Tarleton in the opening game of Wednesday’s doubleheader as the Mean Green took game one 7-2.
North Texas jumped out to a quick lead with a pair of solo home runs in the opening frame and then tacked on a five spot in the second inning on a couple of errors and a three-run home run to extend the lead out to 7-0.
Julia Wernet would go on to settle in and fire five scoreless innings the rest of the way, but the Texan offense could muster only a two-run moonshot from Miranda Pruitt off the right field indoor hitting tunnel in the fourth.
Hallie Saintignan was 2-2 at the dish for the game while Bailee Riggs, Georgia Capell, Mackenzie Peterson, alexis Hoang and Pruitt had one hit each for the Texans’ seven hits. Julia Wernet threw all seven innings, including the final five scoreless. She struck out two.
Game 2: Tarleton 4, North Texas 3
Tarleton rallied for two runs in a thrilling, seventh-inning comeback as Dickerson walked the Texans off with a 4-3 victory over North Texas.
Tarleton got the scoring started right away when Capell sent a missile over the left field fence for her 49th career home run. The junior from Midlothian is already the school’s all-time leader in long balls.
After three consecutive scoreless frames from both sides, North Texas struck for a pair in the top of the fifth on an RBI single and an errant pickoff attempt at third base that allowed the go-ahead run to score. The 2-1 lead carried into the sixth inning as the Texan defense turned a nifty 5-4-3 double play to keep the Mean Green scoreless in the sixth.
In the ensuing half inning, after an outstanding stretch at first to complete the double play, Mackenzie Peterson plated one on a safety squeeze bunt to bring home Capell and tie things at 2-2. UNT answered in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI single into right to set up a thrilling bottom half of the inning.
With one away and two strikes on pinch-hitter Maddie Goin, the North Texas breaking ball came in a little too far and hit Goin to put the tying run on for the top of the lineup. Morgan Medford walked and Riggs reached on an error to bring up the all-time home run leader with the bases loaded and one away.
Capell dropped an RBI single into centerfield to tie the game and then Dickerson followed up with her second walk-off hit in as many homestands with an RBI single into centerfield to plate Medford. The win snapped North Texas’ 11-game winning streak.
Capell led the offense with a 2-2 day with two runs scored and two RBI while Riggs, Dickerson and Cheyenne Floyd recorded the rest of the hits for Tarleton. Floyd ripped a two-out, pinch-hit single for her first career hit.
Tristan Bridges was superb once again with a complete-game victory, allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out three.
Tarleton will host Seattle University this weekend in a three-game series as they return to WAC play in Stephenville.
