30th Annual Texan Club Plowboy Shootout takes on legendary name change, now open for registration

STEPHENVILLE – As the annual Texan Club golf fundraiser approaches, it will take on a new name following the passing of a legendary Tarleton Hall of Famer.

The 30th Annual Perry Elliott Texan Club Plowboy Shootout presented by First Financial Bank is open for registration. The golf tournament will return once again to Squaw Creek Golf Course in Willow Park on Friday, June 25 and all proceeds go to benefit the Tarleton Athletics scholarship fund.

Tarleton Hall of Fame supporter Perry Elliott becomes the tournament namesake moving forward. Elliott served as the Texan Club President for eight years and was a member of the Club for over 30 years. Elliott has served on the Texan Club Board of Directors since 1993 and received the Tarleton All-Purple Award for his contributions to the Tarleton athletic programs. He not only served Tarleton athletics with his time and resources but attended several hundred athletic contests as one of the Texans’ most dedicated fans. He passed away on January 9, 2021.

“Perry Elliott was at the heart and soul of our Texan Club for over 30 years and we miss him every day,” said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lonn Reisman. “He was a man that was deeply involved in athletics and had a servant’s heart for enhancing the student-athlete experience at Tarleton State University. He wanted our athletes to be successful athletically and academically and he shared in our vision of taking Tarleton State University to NCAA Division I.

“I can’t think of a better way to bring honor to him and his family than tying his name to one of the greatest efforts our department has for enhancing student-athlete success – the Perry Elliott Texan Club Plowboy Shootout,” he continued.

The entry fee is $500 per team ($125 per player) for the four-person scramble. There are a pair of tee time flights again this year, with the first tee time set to begin at 8 a.m. and the afternoon tee time at 1 p.m. Check-in times are one hour prior to the tee time. Both tee times will have a shotgun start. Breakfast will be available at 7:30 a.m. with lunch served between tee times and dinner available after the tournament. Beverages will be provided throughout the scramble.

“This is our most important fundraiser of the year because all this money goes directly to benefiting our Tarleton student-athletes through scholarships and enhancement,” said Reisman. “This continues to be a very successful tournament over the years and one of the best tournaments in the area.”

Participants can sign up as individuals or as a team. Individual sign-ups will be assigned to a team. The deadline for registration is Friday, June 18. The entry fee includes the green fee, cart rental, continental breakfast, lunch, dinner and beverages.

Those who are unable to play in the tournament but still want to support the student-athletes can purchase a hole sponsorship for $100. The hole sponsorship includes a sign at one of the 18 tee-boxes on the course recognizing your donation to the scholarship fund. All money raised through the Perry Elliott Plowboy Shootout goes to Tarleton student-athlete scholarships and student-athlete enhancement.

The tournament is offered to former Tarleton alumni and former student-athletes that donned the purple and white, as well as proud supporters and avid fans of Tarleton State University.

“We’d love to have everybody come out,” said Reisman. “The Stephenville and Tarleton State community, our fans, our boosters, our alumni and our former student-athletes all make this an important event. It’s a great time to reconnect. Everybody has a great time out on the course and it provides great fellowship and we’re looking forward to a very successful event on June 25th.”

After the tournament, players will have a chance to win prizes through the annual drawing of tickets.
