Rodriguez Leads Day 1, Freshmen Lead Day 2 in Texans’ First Tournament of 2021-22

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Tarleton Texans wrapped up their first golf tournament of the 2021-22 season on Tuesday with strong efforts by the freshmen at the Missouri State Payne Stewart Memorial at the Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, Missouri.

On Day 2 of the two-day, 54-hole tournament, freshmen Mathilde Brogens and Angela Inocian each posted team-best scores of 76, leading to the best round for the team overall as they posted a 312. The Texans finished 14th as a team with a 947 (+95) across the three rounds.

Sophomore Sofia Rodriguez led the Texans overall at +22, scoring 77-78-80. She finished tied for 50th individually. She has carded under 80 now nine times out of her last 12 rounds in the last four tournaments. Rodriguez put together a clean first round, recording 13 pars, four bogeys and a double-bogey on the Par 5 14th hole, marked the hardest hole on the course. In Rodriguez’s second round, she posted two birdies and avoided anything worse than a bogey, putting her at +13 on the day through two rounds. She birdied the exact same holes in Round 3, holes 9 and 13.

Sophomore Alejandra Cambronero had the second-best Tarleton score with a +24 (237), carding 80-77-80, tying her 56th individually. She shot a 37 on the front side of her first round before a tougher backside, finishing at +9. In Round 2, her best score of the tournament, she doubled Hole 1, but had three birdies on the front for a 36, finishing with a 77.

Brogens was one stroke behind Cambronero at +25 (238), carding 82-80-76, tied for 59th. In her first round, she had a solid front nine 37, scoring a birdie on No. 9. Bogey golf on the back set her back to an 82, where she only improved from there. Her second round included two birdies, five bogeys and three double bogeys, with the front nine her strength again, this time shooting an even 35. In her third round of 76, she posted 11 pars, two birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys. Her improvement in the back nine put her over the top, as she shot a +2 38.

Inocian placed t-67th at +29 (242), carding 80-86-76. Her 10-stroke improvement from Round 2 to Round 3 included a 10-par, two-birdie card following a six-par, 0-birdie second round. She shot 37-39 for her 76, earning her birdies on the Par 3 second hole and Par 5 10th hole.

The last member of the five-woman group was freshman Bridgett Joeris, who finished her first tournament as a Tarleton Texan shooting +31 (244), carding 78-85-81, finishing 72nd. Her opening round included two birdies, eight pars, seven bogeys and one double bogey, earning her birdies on the Par 3 second hole and Par 4 ninth hole.

The Texans next play at the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational at Raven Nest Golf Club in Huntsville, Texas Sept. 27-28.
