September 24, 1936 ~ October 28, 2021 (age 85)
It is with both a sad and joyful heart we share with you our Mother is in Heaven surrounded by the miraculous, loving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ. Carolyn was loved more than words can express by so many people and leaves behind a beautiful legacy in those whose lives she touched! She bestowed love and selflessness on so many – and will be missed tremendously!
On October 28, 2021, Carolyn June Maupin passed away peacefully at home with a smile on her face – holding her daughter’s hand. She fought a courageous battle but was unable to recover from complications following surgery after a fall. She is now healthy, laughing, and having an exciting reunion with loved ones that have passed before.
Carolyn was born at home to Boyd and Ima Tennison in the country outside of the East Texas town of Troup in Cherokee County on September 24, 1936. “Sis” was a beautiful ray of sunshine in a house full of brothers. She spent her childhood in New Summerfield and Jacksonville and graduated Valedictorian from New Summerfield High School in 1954. She loved to play basketball and spend time with friends Patricia Heath and Earlene Cowan. During high school, she met and married Bill Gay and shortly after had three remarkable children – Randy, Karen, and Roger. Carolyn became a small business owner when she was in her twenties and developed a child care establishment called “The Young World” in Old Ocean, TX. Parents delighted in bringing their children to Miss Carolyn so they could experience days filled with love, education, hugs & kisses. She was also married to Billy Charles Underwood of Gorman, TX and Billy Jack Maupin of Stephenville, TX. Each husband predeceased her.
Carolyn was baptized at a young age in a river in East Texas. She loved and trusted the Lord throughout her life. She cherished her family and vowed to be the BEST GRANDMA ever! She emphasized the importance of education to her family and to the children placed in her care. Carolyn had a strong work ethic and could always be found working at her home in Stephenville beside Bill Maupin – mowing, spreading rock, treating trees, and painting the fence. She was fun loving with a quick wit and great humor. Her constant support and encouragement were invaluable throughout her children’s lives.
Carolyn was an accomplished seamstress (even making her own patterns). She created beautiful garments including wedding dresses and Halloween costumes for those she loved. Her creative talents included sewing clothing, crocheting afghans and creating Christmas stockings and hangings. These treasures are used year after year. Carolyn was an excellent cook making dishes that her family loved including chicken fried steak, yeast rolls, cream gravy, pecan pie, peanut brittle, and Root Beer Flurries. Carolyn loved to travel and was always ready to head out the door if opportunity arose. She traveled to all 50 states recently becoming a member of the “Best for Last” club in North Dakota. She also traveled overseas to England, Scotland, Ireland, Malaysia, Europe and lived in Saudi Arabia for several years.
Carolyn leaves behind her extensive, loving family consisting of her three children, son Randy Gay and wife Peggy Sue of Houston, daughter Karen Chancey of Canyon Lake, and son Roger Gay and wife Jamie of Bay City; 6 grandchildren, Stephanie Allen and husband Rick, Amber Chancey-Anguish and husband Aaron, Randy Gay, Jr. and wife Bola, Chris Gay, Roger Gay, Jr., and James Gay; 4 great-grandchildren, Rhys Allen, Houston Allen, Aydan Anguish, and Ayo Gay; 2 step-daughters, Cathrine Huddleston and husband Joe of Frisco, and Suzan King and husband James of Dublin and their children and grandchildren, Kaitlyn King and Brynlynn & Tustin Williams, and Lesley Gibbs and partner Ashley Kleymann and Gunnar and Peyton Gibbs; brothers Wayne Tennison and wife Lynn of Mission and George Tennison of New Summerfield. Carolyn joins the following loved ones who passed on before her: her former husbands, parents, and in-laws, her brother, Boyce Tennison and son whom Carolyn cherished-(Carl) Scooter; her much-loved Aunt Ruby Fisher; several special friends from the Poynor family such as Billie Jean, Sandra & Frank, Peggy Joice, and Margie; her sister-in-law Dorothy; and her brothers-in-law Claude and wife Janet, and Joe & Edwin Gay.
