STEPHENVILLE – For the second time in the three weeks the Western Athletic Conference has been dishing out awards this tennis season, Tarleton collected them all.

On Wednesday, Deniza Marcinkevica was named the WAC Singles Athlete of the Week, and was also part of the WAC Doubles Team of the Week with teammate Jemi Aguilar.

In just three weeks of the season, Marcinkevica has earned a WAC Singles Athlete of the Week honor and been part of two WAC Doubles Team of the Week recognitions. Aguilar has been a part of two WAC Doubles Team of the Week honors.

This award was given to Marcinkevica following her 2-0 week, a big reason why Tarleton knocked off two Division I programs on the road to go 2-0 in Nashville. The junior swept the top players from Lipscomb and Belmont, team matches the Texans won 5-2 and 4-3, respectively. On Friday, Marcinkevica beat Lipscomb’s Kate Popova in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. On Saturday, she beat Belmont’s Gina Feistel 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.

Marcinkevica improved to 3-2 on the season, all five matches played in the No. 1 position. Her two losses came at Texas A&M to the No. 122 ranked player in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Division I Women’s National Rankings, and at Oklahoma to the No. 105 ranked player.

Tarleton’s top pair of Marcinkevica and Aguilar took home their second weekly award after going 2-0 to remain undefeated on the season (3-0). Playing in the No. 1 position, they beat Lipscomb’s Popova and Maddox Bandy 6-2, then beat Belmont’s Anastasiya Zholdakova and Viktoria Kliimand 6-3. Marcinkevica has not lost in doubles since arriving to Tarleton. Aguilar has won eight straight doubles matches that went the distance, dating back to last season, all in the No. 1 position.

In the first week of the 2022 spring campaign, the Texans earned both WAC weekly awards, with Celia Vaudiau named WAC Singles Athlete of the Week, and Marcinkevica and Aguilar taking home WAC Doubles Team of the Week honors.
