MCALLEN – Mathilde Brogens had a tough start to the UTRGV Invitational, but her resilience took her to the best finish by a Tarleton Texan this season.

Brogens’ +10 tournament score at the UTRGV Invitational Monday-Tuesday at the McAllen Country Club in McAllen, Texas, placed her tied for third. It was the first top-five and second top-10 finish by a Texan this season, as Sofia Rodriguez placed tied-10th at the Lady Red Wolves Classic in the fall.

Tarleton finished tied-12th as team at +97, battling the elements throughout with rain and wind affecting play greatly.

“The overall team score was higher than we expected as a team,” head coach Isabel Jimenez said. “Weather did not cooperate at all this week, but every team played the same field under the same circumstances, so that’s not a valid excuse. Brogens played great golf this week and was able to overcome the rain, wind and cold. We have to be patient and keep working. Better team overall scores will come soon.”

Brogens shot 76-75-75 across her three rounds at the Par 72, 6,003-yard course. In the first round, she started +4 through her first five holes, capped off by a double bogey on the Par 5, 11th hole. Back-to-back birdies after that, followed up by an eagle on the next Par 5, No. 16, put her back on track to finish even through the rest of the round to go +4 in Round 1.

Her next two rounds were much cleaner, with Brogens rattling off 22 pars and five birdies over the final 36 holes. Per usual, the Texan freshman dominated Par 3’s, leading the 77-woman field with an average score of 2.92 on the short holes. She was the only one in the tournament with an under-par score on Par 3s.

Brogens finished tied for third with UTRGV’s Samantha Garza, Houston Baptist’s Lou Rousselot and Creighton’s Eleanor Hudepohl, just two strokes behind the winner, Utah Valley’s Leighton Shosted.

Brogens’ previous best tournament finish was tied-17th at the Lady Red Wolves Classic.

Freshman Angela Inocian had her best round on Tuesday to finish tied-33rd in the tournament, shooting +22 overall. She turned in a +5, 77 in the third round, going -2 over her last nine holes for her best round of the spring. Her three rounds were 81-80-77.

Tarleton’s third freshman, Bridgett Joeris, scored +30, shooting 81-84-81 to finish tied-55th. Sophomore Rodriguez shot +35, with rounds of 83-86-82, placing 64th.

Among all 16 teams, Tarleton had the best score on Par 3’s at +12, averaging 3.25. Houston Baptist won the tournament at +56.

Tarleton has just one week in-between tournaments, playing in the HBU Women’s Intercollegiate in Sugar Land, Texas, at the Riverbend Country Club next Monday-Tuesday.
