Despite owning best record, Tarleton Tennis picked 3rd in WAC Pre-Conference Coaches Poll

STEPHENVILLE – The Western Athletic Conference announced on Wednesday the results of their Women’s Tennis Pre-Conference Coaches Poll, with Tarleton taking third in the Southwest Division.

Tarleton, who owns the best record in non-conference play among all WAC teams, earned 16 points with one first-place vote amid voting between all six head coaches from the Southwest Division. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.

Stephen F. Austin was picked to finish first in the WAC’s Southwest Division, garnering 23 points and three first-place votes. Abilene Christian was selected second with 21 points and two first-place votes. Tied with Tarleton in points is Sam Houston at 16, no first-place votes. Lamar, fifth at eight points, and UTRGV, sixth at six points, round out the group.

The Texans are 11-4 this season. The next best record by a WAC team is 8-4, held by UTRGV. SFA, who was picked to finish first, is 7-5 on the year.

The Texans are 3-0 against Western Athletic Conference teams this season, although they were not classified as conference matches. Tarleton beat Grand Canyon, who was picked to finish first in the West Division, 4-2 in Phoenix. Tarleton swept Dixie State 7-0 in Phoenix and UTRGV 7-0 in Stephenville.

Tarleton begins conference play this week with two neutral site matches in Huntsville, Texas, against Lamar on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT and against SFA on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.
