Jemi Aguilar named WAC Singles Athlete of the Week, Texans take 12th award

STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton tennis team’s epic week just got a little sweeter.

After clinching the Western Athletic Conference Southwest Division title on Sunday, the conference announced Wednesday that Tarleton senior Jemi Aguilar is the WAC Singles Athlete of the Week.

This marks the 12th weekly honor awarded to the Tarleton tennis team this season. In the 12 weeks the WAC has dished out weekly awards, Tarleton has won at least one in eight of those weeks, sweeping the awards four times. So of the 24 total awards, Tarleton has won half, the other 12 dispersed across the other 10 programs in the WAC.

Aguilar won her third WAC weekly award of the season by going 2-0 in singles over the weekend. The Orlando, Florida, native defeated Sam Houston’s Andjela Vidovic 6-1, 7-5 on Saturday, then gritted out a come-from-behind victory against former WAC Singles Athlete of the Week, Isabelle Bahr from UTRGV 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6).

Aguilar’s singles win on Saturday proved vital in Tarleton’s 4-3 win over Sam Houston, and her win on Sunday not only helped Tarleton sweep UTRGV 7-0 for the second time this season, but it also boosted the Texans to the first WAC regular season championship in Tarleton athletics history.

The senior won two straight in her final home matches at the Potishman-Lard Tennis Courts to improve to 8-9 on the season. She’s the fourth different Texan to win a singles award this year.

The Texans have won six straight matches, 10 of their last 11 and 16 of their last 18. Sitting at 17-4, the Texans have their most wins in a season since 2005-06. Tarleton is 8-0 against WAC teams this season, 4-0 in conference play.

At 12 WAC weekly awards this season, Tarleton is tops in the conference. Grand Canyon has earned five weekly awards this year for second most in the conference.
