It’s been a strong start to the cross country season for Kevin Baez.

The Western Athletic Conference announced Wednesday that Baez, a senior from Vanderbilt, Texas, was named the WAC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week.

The award from the WAC comes on the heels of Baez placing first in the ACU Naimadu Classic in Abilene where he ran a 6k time of 18:31.5.

He finished ahead of runners from Texas Tech, TCU, ACU and West Texas A&M. His finish helped the Texan men to a fourth-place overall finish.

The win was Baez’s second career first place finish after he won the Ranger College Cross Country Invitational a season ago.

Baez and Tarleton will race next at the UTA Invitational on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. The race will be held at the Lynn Creek Park at Joe Pool Lake.
