Men finish 4th, women 6th for Tarleton XC at UTA Invitational

GRAND PRAIRIE – With a host of new faces racing at Lynn Creek Park at Joe Pool Lake on Saturday morning, Tarleton cross country had two goals.

Push their hardest and compete.

They did just that at the UTA Invitational. The men finished fourth with a score of 109 behind UTA, TCU and Hill College while the women finished sixth with a score of 148 behind SMU, TCU, UTA, Texas Wesleyan and DBU.

Eight of Tarleton’s 11 racers made their season debut on Saturday, including all the men.

Khristian Vastlik was the top finisher for the Texans on the men’s side, clocking in at 16:14.7 and finishing 18th in his season debut. Sophomore Austin Flores crossed the finish line next at 26th with a time of 16:40.1. Freshman AJ Alfaro finished 32nd, running the 5K in 16:55.2. Senior Gerardo Cipres finished 41st, running 17:56.9. Freshman Logan Courtney rounded out the men’s racers placing 45th with a time of 18:47.2.

On the women’s side, senior Vianney Sanchez finished first for Tarleton, placing 25th with a time of 20:40.6. Sophomore Georgina Balderas crossed next in 29th, running 20:48.4. Junior Aimee Landers-Wilburn placed 32nd with a 21:03.7 finish. Juniors Jordan Jones and Maria Diaz-Fernandez crossed back-to-back with the 39th and 40th place finishes respectively. Jones ran 22:19.0 while Diaz Fernandez was just 24 seconds behind with a 22:43.7 finish.

The Texans will be back in action next week as they head to College Station for the Texas A&M Invitational at Watts Cross Country Course.
