SAN ANGELO – The Tarleton tennis team is much different coming off of a WAC regular season championship, but you wouldn’t know it by strictly looking at results, because there was still a lot of winning.

The Texans participated in their first tournament of the 2022-23 season in San Angelo at the ASU Slam Fest Friday-Saturday, hosted by Angelo State. The Texans and Rambelles were joined by Abilene Christian, Texas State and Southwestern in the event.

Tarleton played in 38 total matches, going 23-15 overall. In singles, the Texans went 16-9, followed up by a 7-6 mark in doubles.

Tarleton debuted six newcomers of its nine-woman roster. Freshman Elif Albayrak left the best first impression, winning Flight C Singles after going 3-0, defeating Texas State’s Andrea Pineda 6-3 6-2, Southwestern’s Lauren Chisholm 6-0 6-4, and Angelo State’s Eva Schwartz 6-2 6-2. Albayrak also went 2-1 in doubles, partnered with newcomer freshman Emma Persson.

Returners Elsa Boisson and Celia Vaudiau also went undefeated in singles. Boisson was a Flight E Singles co-winner thanks to a 3-0 mark, with wins over Southwestern’s Lydia Lee 2-6 6-1 [10-5], Southwestern’s Kimberly Duncan 6-1 7-5, and Texas State’s Emma Carr 6-2 6-0. Vaudiau went 2-0 in Flight D, beating Angelo State’s Alexandra Vishnevskaya 6-4 4-6 [10-7] and Southwestern’s Erika Synoski 6-1 6-1.

Returning junior Martha Makantasi and Persson each went 2-1 in Flight A Singles, with Makantasi going 2-1 in Flight A Doubles, as well, playing with freshman Ximena Morales. Morales went 1-1 in Flight D Singles.

The other three Texans each picked up a win in singles and a win in doubles, all three Tarleton newcomers; freshman Clara Sobius, freshman Laure Razet and redshirt sophomore Audrey Pacheco.

Next on the docket is the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Texas Regional Championship from Sept. 22-25, hosted by TCU in Fort Worth at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. This is an invite only event based on rankings. Last year, Makantasi and Deniza Marcinkevica participated, advancing to the main draw.
