Close call for Stephenville Homecoming

The #1 ranked Stephenville Yellow Jackets are 5-0. 

Stephenville (5-0) hosted Wichita Falls Rider (3-2) this week for Homecoming and it was a close one, but the Jackets came away with the win, 43-42.

The home crowd was nervous after Rider jumped ahead 21-0 in the first quarter, but a 50-yard pass from Stephenville’s #20 Ryan Gafford to #10 Payton Poston got the Jackets rolling. And the Yellow Jackets kept rolling, scoring 10 in the second, 14 in the third and 12 in the fourth quarter to win the game.

Sophomore quarterback Gafford was 16 of 25 for 321 yards and 5 touchdowns. Gafford also carried the ball 9 times for 58 yards. Carrying the bulk of the load on the ground for the Jackets was junior #17 Tate Maruska, who carried the ball 30 times for 125 yards and a touchdown.

Gafford’s main targets through the air were senior Postion 4 times for 138 yards and 2 TDs, senior #18 Topher Foster 3 times for 70 yards and a TD, junior #14 Wyatt Kreutz 4 times for 45 yards, and sophomore #12 Tristin Gentry 3 times for 51 yards and 2 TDs.

Senior #27 Jack Barkley had the lone sack of the evening and senior #8 Hayden Westbrook recovered a fumble for the Jackets. Leading Stephenville in tackles were senior #3 Kyler Eudy with 6 tackles and 8 assists, also a large contributor was senior #9 Taylor Bennett with 5 tackles and 6 assists.

The Yellow Jackets will look to continue the winning streak when they play host to the #7 Brownwood Lions for the annual Heart of Gold Game on Friday, October 1.
