STEPHENVILLE — Regular season play hasn’t even started yet, and Tarleton Tennis is already winning awards.

The Western Athletic Conference announced on Wednesday that Tarleton’s Emma Persson has been named the WAC Women’s Tennis Singles Player of the Month for September.

Persson, a Texan freshman, impressed at one of the top fall tournaments of the season just under two weeks ago, going on a Sweet 16 singles main draw run at the ITA Texas Regional Championship in Fort Worth, hosted by TCU. In a tournament that included all of the top programs across Texas, she defeated North Texas’ Matilde Morais 6-4 3-6 [13-11] and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Sofia Pinto 7-6(4) 4-6 [11-9] to advance to the Sweet 16, before ultimately losing to SMU’s Jackie Nylander.

Persson had automatically advanced through the qualifying singles draw based off of her impressive Universal Tennis Rating.

Overall across two tournaments in September, she went a combined 4-2 in singles play. Besides going 2-1 at the ITA Texas Regional Championship, she also went 2-1 in Flight A Singles at the ASU Slam Fest, hosted by San Angelo.

WAC weekly awards have been a common occurrence for the Tarleton women’s tennis program. Last year, the Texans won 12 WAC weekly awards, winning at least one in eight of the 14 weeks that awards were distributed. Four times Tarleton swept the awards. The Texans had six Singles Athlete of the Week awards and six Doubles Team of the Week honors

Also announced Wednesday, UTRGV’s Marjorie Souza and Isabelle Bahr were named the WAC Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Month.
