FROM THE RELEASE:

The Erath County Sheriff’s Office has an update on the shooting that occurred in the late evening hours of January 11, 2023.

Shortly after 8 pm on Wednesday, January 11, the Erath County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a shooting that occurred at an address just off of FM 2303. Deputies and EMS quickly arrived on scene and began treatment of the victim. A diligent search was subsequently conducted for a possible suspect who was reported to law enforcement as having left the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

The victim’s injuries were treated at the scene by an ambulance crew to prepare the victim for further follow-up treatment at the hospital. The Erath County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Stephenville Police Department, and the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Troopers conducted a diligent search of the scene, nearby neighborhoods and buildings for any signs of a potential suspect. A Warden from the Texas Parks and Wildlife deployed a drone to assist ground troops in their search. The Erath County Sheriff’s Office also reached out to the Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers that night to assist in the investigation.

The next day investigators went back to the scene in daylight hours and looked for any additional evidence of the offense or where the alleged suspect may have gone. Throughout this investigation, a number of witnesses were interviewed along with additional meetings with the alleged victim.

All investigative leads were exhausted in this investigation and no evidence was ever discovered to prove that the shooting was caused by an unknown subject who fled the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement. Through the course of the investigation, investigators were never able to discover any evidence to support that the community was ever in any danger. Investigators were also never able to discover if there was or is anyone on the loose who may pose a threat to the safety and security of the community.

The Erath County Sheriff’s Office wants to thank the Stephenville Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Warden and the Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Ranger Division along with the Emergency Medical Staff for their assistance in this investigation.
