It’s gameday for the Stephenville Honeybees as they are on the road to the Quarterfinal Championship game tonight. The Bees (31-4) are ranked No. 10 in 4A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, came out of District 6, 4A in second place and will face Lubbock Estacado (24-11) Tuesday, February 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Clyde HS Gym.

The Bees are coming into the game off a close win in the Area Championship over a good Sanger (28-6) team, 33-30, last week, who was ranked just behind Stephenville at No. 11. Leading the Bees in baskets was Lillie Skiles with 11 points, Mya Wilson with 8, Lucy Espinoza and Kyla Ray each got 5 and Brinley Hall with 4.

“It was a hard fought game between two top teams in the state in 4A,” said Head Coach Jason Hodges. “I thought our defense frustrated them at times and our ability to hit some timely shots and get stops down the stretch secured the victory.”

The road to the Quarterfinals started with a Bi-District win over the Snyder Lady Tigers (16-18), 66-30. Then the area title over Sanger and now the Bees will face the Matadors of Estacado.

“Estacado will be a good matchup for us. They have some height, are long and athletic and will look to push the tempo,” Hodges said. “It is a great opportunity for our program to take that next step and advance to the regional tournament. It won’t be easy, but our defense has been solid all year and hopefully the old adage of “defense travels” will be true Tuesday night.”

Tip-off for the Region I Quarterfinals will be Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Clyde HS Gym. Honeybees will be the visitors. Tickets will be sold at the door for $5 for adults and $3 for students. TGCA, THSCA, THADA, TABC, District 6, Senior and Military passes will all be honored at the gate.
