Charlene Laney Young was welcomed into heaven on March 20, 2023. She was 92 years old.

Charlene was a lifelong Erath County resident. She was born April 13, 1930, and was the second of six children born to Jake Laney and Violet King Laney. Charlene graduated from Stephenville High School in 1948.

On January 1, 1949, Charlene married Jewell D. (Joe)Young in Stephenville. They had three children, Jeannie Diane, Larry, and Randy. She held several jobs in her lifetime. Some of those included the lunch counter at McCrory’s Department Store, Teague’s station, and the snack bar at Stephenville High School in the 90s. She was also the owner and manager of Charlene’s Chicken House in the 70s and 80s. Charlene was a hard worker and was proud to serve her fried chicken and hamburgers to the residents of Stephenville. She had very fond memories of her time at the Chicken House.

Charlene loved to travel with Joe and her neighbors, Joyce and Bill Chew. Every summer, they would load up the RV and head to a different state. They would take pictures at the state line and collect them in photo albums in hopes of visiting all 50 states.

Charlene enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They all called her Nana and so did anyone else they would bring over to meet her. She would always say, “Just call me Nana, everyone else does”.

In her later years, she and Joe moved from town to the country and bought a house in Selden. The Selden Community opened their arms and hearts to them. They became members of the Selden Baptist Church and found a lifelong family. She was so grateful to have such a wonderful community and church to lean on.

Charlene was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Young, her daughter, Diane Pierce, her sons, Larry and Randy Young, her brothers, Dean, Bill, and Tommy Laney, her sister, Anna Sperry, her grandson, Shawn Stewart, her granddaughter, Nicha Cox, her great-grandson, Shawn Stewart Jr. and her great grand- granddaughter Kaydince Baker.
