Men Second, Women Third at Weekend WTC NIRA Rodeo

STEPHENVILLE — Saddle bronc rider Gus Gaillard and goat-tying specialist Tori Brower each snagged first-place points for Tarleton State University over the weekend at the Western Texas College National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association event in Snyder.

Gaillard posted a finals-best 82 to complement his first-round 74 for a 156 total that helped Tarleton’s men take second at WTC. Teammate Ira Dickenson’s two-head 150 was good for fourth in the event.

In bareback riding Payton Lackey took third with his 75-74­–149 tally, and Jake Kesl earned sixth with a 67-61­–128.

Landry White and Ben Mitchell each flashed combined times under 10 seconds for third and fourth in steer wrestling. White’s 4.4-4.9–9.3 was a scant .2 ahead of Mitchell’s two-steer 9.5.

Tie-down roper Roe Brayden took third over the weekend, as did team ropers Garrett Roffino and Kadin Babb. Brayden notched an 8.5 in the opening round and added an 8.7 in the finals for a 17.2 total, while Roffino and Babb raced to a 4.8-11.8–16.6.

Brower turned in a 13.3 combined clocking on times of 6.7 and 6.6 seconds as the Tarleton women captured third in Snyder. Fellow goat tyer Timber Kelly was fifth in the event with a two-head 14.2. 

Breakaway ropers Kinlie Brennise and Libby Winchell were fourth and sixth in the average, each with a 2.1 in the preliminary round. In the finals Brennise’s second 2.1 was .1 better than Winchell. Barrel Racer Acey Pinkston wound up second on runs of 13.74 and 13.73.

Both Tarleton teams return to action April 13 for the Howard College Rodeo in Big Spring.
