(June 17, 1945 – April 20, 2023)

On April 20th, Vada Wetzel, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend passed away at 77 years old. Vada was born in Comanche, TX and married Troy Kellam Wetzel in 1963. They celebrated 60 years of marriage on April 11th, 2023.

She began working outside the home when her youngest was in Middle School. She found a “perfect” job in the public library but kept thinking her gifts and graces would be better given to babies whose parents needed to leave them in daycare. So she began a long and incredibly devoted career as an Infant and Toddler teacher who insured hundreds of children were loved and their parents supported during those difficult first years of childhood. This was truly her life’s calling, and her limitless love will have a lasting impact for generations to come.  She had an abundant delight of reading and especially loved sharing this joy through children’s books. Vada also enjoyed spending her time tending to her butterfly garden and learning about other countries and cultures.

Vada is survived by her beloved husband, Troy Wetzel; her sisters, Joyce Swindle and RoseMary Gaby; her son Joel Wetzel; her daughter and son-in-law Kelley and Mark McDonald; her eight grandchildren: Joseph Salamanca, Anna Salamanca, Malachi McDonald, Madeline Hobbs, Benjamin McDonald, Nathaniel McDonald, Nicholas Versluys, and Michael Hoffmann; her three great-grandchildren: Annabelle and Wesley Cornwell, and Emily Hoffmann, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Vada was preceded in death by her father, Hubert Humie Hancock, her mother, Rubye Kilgore Hancock, and her siblings: Wendell Hancock and Dorothy Barfield

A memorial service will be held at the Live Oak Cemetery in Dublin, TX on May 20, 2023 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate a children’s book in her name.
