Alice Jean Porter, 70, passed away in Stephenville, after a lengthy illness on Friday, June 2, 2023.  She was born on December 7, 1952, to Johnavie (Johnnie) Casstevens Porter and Gene R. Porter in Stephenville, Texas. Alice was a life-long resident of Stephenville, attending Mrs. Evatt’s Kindergarten, Chamberlain Elementary School, Stephenville Jr. High and graduating from Stephenville High School in 1971. She earned a Bachelor of Business Degree from Tarleton State University in 1975, where she was a member of the O.W.L.S. Social Club.

Having grown up working in the family business, Porter and Son, Seedsmen, Alice became office manager and eventually ran the business. In 1994, Johnnie wanted to retire and Alice wanted to “see what else is out there,” so they closed the store. Alice went to work at the Store at Pecan Valley, running the mail-order department. When that business closed, Alice became a librarian at the Stephenville Public Library and later at the Dublin Public Library. After retirement, Alice became caregiver to Johnnie for several years.

Alice was a member of Girl Scout Troop #135 from second grade through junior high. She was a prolific and meticulous counted cross-stitcher, worked thousands of crossword puzzles, and was an avid reader and watcher of TCM movies. Alice became interested in genealogy while working at the Dublin Library. She did extensive research on all branches of her family as well as the family of her brother-in-law. For relaxation, Alice enjoyed adult coloring books and of course, her finished pages were perfectly done. Alice did prolific research to find articles and photos documenting the history of her class’s school years so that she and Kathy Tate could co-chair the committee for SHS Class of ‘71 class reunions. Alice volunteered at the Stephenville Historical House Museum and helped to raise money for the Oxford House Preservation Project. Alice was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Stephenville.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Gene Porter; maternal grandparents Crickett and G.L. Casstevens; paternal grandparents, Lou Ella and V.O. Porter; aunts and uncles, Dorothy and Bud Casstevens, Joy and Casey Casstevens, Vayne and Joe Peterson, Nell and Anthon Legion, and Jane and Barney Welch; cousins, Russell Welch and Lynda Welch Black.
