Keylan Johnson, D.J. Harris take UAC Player of the Week honors, Tarleton’s 2nd straight week of awards

STEPHENVILLE — It’s another week, which means more awards for the Tarleton State football team.

The United Athletic Conference announced Monday that Texan wide receiver Keylan Johnson and Texan linebacker D.J. Harris have been named the UAC Offensive Player of the Week and UAC Defensive Player of Week, respectively.

Through two weeks of the season, these already mark the third and fourth awards Tarleton State has won out of eight possible. Defensive back Patrick Jones and kicker/punter Adrian Guzman were UAC Defensive and Special Teams players of the week last Monday.

This week, Johnson and Harris led the Texans to a 52-31 win against North Alabama in Tarleton State’s home opener to begin the season 2-0.

Johnson scored four touchdowns on Saturday, finishing with 219 receiving yards on six receptions. He tied a program record for touchdowns scored in a single game at four, and had the fifth most receiving yards in a single game in team history at 219. Johnson has the most receiving touchdowns in a single game at the FCS level this season, and the tied most across all of NCAA Division I, FBS and FCS. His 219 receiving yards are the second most in a single game at the FCS level this season, and the third most across all of D1, FBS and FCS. Johnson has the only 200-plus yard, 4-plus TD game across all of D1, FBS and FCS, this season.

Harris had a team-high 12 tackles, a sack, 1.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry on Saturday. It marked his 11th career double-digit tackle game.

The Texans are 2-0 for the first time in their NCAA Division I era, beginning the year with a pair of wins for the first time since 2019. They’ve scored 104 points over the first two contests, their most points in a two-game stretch since Nov. 2-9, 2019, which also marked the last time the Texans had consecutive games with 50-plus points scored.

Also announced Monday, Abilene Christian’s Kyle Ramsey and Southern Utah’s Zach Mitchell were named the UAC Special Teams and Freshman Players of the Week, respectively.
