Texans sweep California Baptist for Senior Day victory Saturday

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State sees their second win at home this week after taking the Lancers down in three sets. 

The Purple and White stole three consecutive sets over CBU at 25-22, 25-17, and 25-23. 

Tarleton Volleyball claimed their second win of the week on Senior Day after taking down the Lancers on Saturday and Grand Canyon on Thursday. The loss to Tarleton State left California Baptist with an overall record of 14-11 and a 7-7 conference record. The Texans are now 15-13 overall and 6-8 in conference.

Breanna McDonough led the Purple and White in kills with 11. Rajini Fitzmaurice compiled 10 kills for Tarleton State and Allison Bryant claimed eight for the Texans. Grayson Schirpik and Matti Theurer each added two aces to lead the team. Megan Hodges led the team in assists with 23 and Maldonado Ortiz contributed 16. Theurer amassed 15 digs, Hodges added 11 and Fitzmaurice had 10. 

The opening frame saw the first point claimed by the visitors with a kill. The first set saw four lead changes and 11 ties, leaving the audience in Wisdom on their toes. With the final tie at point 21, Burke laid down a kill to take the lead for the Texans. An error from the visitors and kills from McDonough and Bryant tallied the final points to secure the first stanza for Tarleton State at 25-22. 

In set two, the Texans came out hot with four unanswered points. After CBU got on the board with a kill, Burke and McDonough landed back-to-back kills to put Tarleton State up by five. From there, the Purple and White maintained at least a two-point lead through an 18-15 score before a Bryant kill started a 6-0 run to put the set out of reach. Schirpik landed a set-clinching kill to win it 25-17.

The third stanza opened with a kill from the visitors followed by a service ace to see California Baptist in the lead, 2-0. Schirpik claimed the first point for the Texans with a kill but the Lancers replied with a kill. A four-score run from the Purple and White saw Tarleton State ahead by two at 5-3. The home team held the lead for the remainder of the set, but Lancers added four consecutive points to tie the set at the 21st point. McDonough claimed the lead for the Purple and White with a kill. Mauser added the final point for CBU but Fitzmaurice laid down her final kill in Wisdom to seal the deal for Tarleton State at 25-23. 

Texan Volleyball will head to Edinburg, Texas, to take on the Vaqueros Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The match between Tarleton State and UTRGV can be found on ESPN+.
